Peter Hawes passed away on 29 October at home at Turakina Beach. Hawes made a significant contribution to New Zealand playwriting in the 1980s and achieved productions of his works in all the cities which supported professional theatre companies at that time.
The Bruce Mason Playwriting Award was presented to Ahilan Karunaharan at the Playmarket Accolades held at the Hannah Playhouse in Wellington on 25 November 2018. The $10,000 cash prize recognises professional success in the career of the writer and is designed to encourage their continued exploration of the theatre medium.
PLAYMARKET has carried out research into works being staged by professional theatres in 2017 and the results paint a healthy picture of New Zealand productions on our stages.
Of the 221 works produced professionally in our theatres 79% of them were New Zealand works with 9 companies creating seasons of 100% NZ work. No theatre company staged less than 50% NZ work.
